Seven months after his investiture, President Alan García lost his first cabinet minister: Pilar Mazzetti, the interior minister, resigned on 23 February. Legislators from the ruling Partido Aprista Peruano (PAP) were the most vociferous in calling for Mazzetti, an independent technocrat, to go. They claim this was to protect the government's anti-corruption image, but it is an open secret that the party wanted a greater presence in the cabinet.
